Mt. Poso Cogeneration Plant Goes Green
In partnership with DTE Energy Service, Macpherson Energy owns and operates the Mt. Poso Cogeneration Plant in Kern County. Originally a coal-fired cogeneration facility, the team converted the plant in February 2012 to a biomass-fueled facility, winning Engineering News Record California’s “Best Industrial/Manufacturing Project of the Year.”
The plant runs on 100% wood-waste biomass fuel sourced from nearby urban and agricultural sources. Mt. Poso produces 44 megawatts of clean, renewable energy, enough to power more than 30,000 homes, by using existing resources from our oil operations and Kern County.
Macpherson Energy is able to reuse water from our oil recovery activities as steam to produce electricity. Renewable energy from Mt. Poso is in turn sold to Pacific Gas and Electric to bring California one step closer to reaching its renewable energy targets.
